Carl has been an Active Patrol Member for 21 years from 2004 to 2025 and for his services to the Club and surf life saving was awarded Life Membership at the Club’s Annual General Meeting on 06/07/2025.
In almost every year of his membership, as well as being an active patrol member, Carl held a significant position on the Club Committee and undertook the full duties of each position.
On ten occasions, Carl’s service was recognised by way of a Club Award of Excellence, and by way of a SLS Illawarra Award of Excellence on six occasions.
As Patrol Captain (16 years), Age Manager (9 years), Age Manager Co-ordinator (2 years), Deputy President (3 years) and Club President (3 years), Carl displayed strong leadership skills and pursued an agenda focussed on:
- leading his patrol team to be reliable, vigilant and capable of dealing with any incident that may arise on the beach or in the surf, resulting in his patrol winning the Club patrol competition on three occasions over the 16 years Carl was Patrol Captain,
- leading by example achieving 100% personal patrol attendance for 18 seasons, out of a total of 21 patrol seasons completed,
- leading and developing a group of U6 nipper members (including his son Jack) and continuing to train and develop them over nine seasons until they reached 13 years of age and qualified as Cadet lifesavers. In those years Carl was recognised as Club Age Manager of the Year on two occasions, and on both occasions went on to be recognised as the SLS Illawarra Age Manager of the Year,
- as Age Manager Co-ordinator, training, leading and assisting the Club’s nine Age Managers for two seasons,
- setting and achieving personal agendas as Deputy President and President, to improve the financial stability of the Club by organising the annual Appeal Day street collection, fostering a project to approach local businesses for donations, and negotiating a significant donation from Peabody Energy (Metropolitan Colliery),
- assisting the Club to meet its obligations to provide a competition official/s at carnivals by becoming an accredited Surf Sports Official and attending and participating each year at local carnivals, and Branch, State and Australian Championships from 2016/17 to 2024/25 (9 years), and
- overall, working towards achieving positive outcomes for the Club and for the benefit of members and the community.
