In 2002 Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club with the support of the local community, successfully ran the Stanwell Park Ocean Challenge, a 2.4km ocean swim from Coalcliff beach to Stanwell Park beach.

14 successful swims were run between 2002 and 2016.  The event was always going to be a challenging swim for some of the swimmers, and ensuring the safety of around 300 swimmers and in some years up to 400 swimmers, was the Surf Club’s main priority.  Sea and weather conditions resulted in postponement one year to the following Sunday, and total cancellation another year.

After repeated postponements in 2019 and 2020 because of weather conditions, and later Covid restrictions, no further swims have taken place.  To those swimmers who pre-registered and paid entry fees for these swims, a partial refund is available and swimmers will be notified by email of how refunds can be paid.

A decision has now been made not to run the Coalcliff to Stanwell Park Ocean Swim again in the foreseeable future;  the Committee and members of Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC  extend their thanks and appreciation to the hundreds of swimmers who participated in our swims over the years and assisted with our fund raising efforts.

Our thanks are also extended to our local sponsors including Equilibrium Healthcare, Binners Farm, Al’s Gourmet Meats (up to 2015), and Christians Premium Meats (from 2016), Grima Brothers Fruit (up to 2017) and Binners Farm (from 2018).

A special thank you to Paul Ellercamp from Oceanswims.com for assistance with on-line entries and promotion of the Stanwell Park Ocean Challenge.
