Pointscore will be held as per the season calendar
Point score will commence at 9.00 am sharp (ironperson event will commence at 8:30am), beginning with a short information address to the children and parents, and the marking of Age group rolls. Normal finishing time is approx 11.00am (dependant on surf conditions).
Late arrival for point score - if for some reason you arrive after the roll has been marked, it is the parent’s responsibility to contact the Age Manager on arrival at the beach, to ensure their child’s name is marked off.
On wet days, or in the event of uncertain weather conditions, a decision will be made at the beach as to whether the point score is to be held. If point score is cancelled, notification will made via HSP communication platforms.
Water Safety - SLSA and all Clubs have a duty of care towards members participating in a sanctioned surf lifesaving aquatic activity. SLSA has a Water Safety Policy which sets out risk management procedures and minimum requirements for the provision of water safety for aquatic activities. If minimum requirements cannot be met on a particular day either for point score or training, water events will be cancelled.
All point score water events on Sundays are firstly dependent on surf conditions and a lifesaving patrol on duty on the day; the Beach Patrol Captain has the final say as to whether or not water events can be held.
Subject to that it is then a requirement that a risk assessment of the surf, weather and other conditions is undertaken by a Club member identified for the day as well the Patrol Captain, surf coaches and JAC and that the
- IRB is available and where possible in the water during water events.
- One water safety officer (SRC or Bronze holder) is available for every five children.
The U14 age group will be the first group to enter the water followed then by the Under 9s to Under 13s.
As far as practicable, swim and board events will be held at each point score.
Gaining Points
Attendance will be measured according to the criteria outlined below.
Attendance at Nippers
Recording your child’s attendance at nippers is important for three reasons:
- Counts towards the 100% attendance award
- Confirms the child’s participation at point score if an injury occurs and a claim for re-imbursement of medical costs is lodged.
It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that their child’s attendance has been recorded.
Attendance at Water
A child must attempt at least one water event for their “attendance at water” to be counted.
If a child does not attempt any water events they will not be counted as having attended water events, nor will they receive attendance points to qualify for water trophies and awards.
A child must have an attendance of 75% or greater at point score days over the season.
If a child is pulled along by a board, water safety person or parent or carried part of the way during the Open Water Swim or in the Swim point score, it will be counted as an attempt and no points will be recorded. A child can have a rest while they attempt the swim.
Attendance at Beach
A child must attempt at least one beach event for their “attendance at beach” to be counted. If a child does not attempt any beach events they will not be counted as having attended beach events, nor will they receive attendance points to qualify for beach trophies and awards.
A child must have an attendance of 75% or greater at Point score Days.
Attendance Exemption
If a child has been selected as a representative in an SLSA team and is unable to attend point score for that reason, then the child’s attendance for this day will be awarded and average points credited. This exemption is for the competitor only.
Accruement of Points
1st place = 4 points, 2nd place = 3 points, 3rd place = 2 points, Participation = 1 point
Note: boys and girls accrue points separately.
At the completion of each event, all placings and points will be recorded by the appropriate Age Manager after consultation with the event judges.
Pointscore
To ensure Junior members become familiar with competition rules applied at Inter-Club carnivals and Branch and State championships, point score will be conducted in accordance with the SLSA Surf Sport Manual.
These rules include
(a) No deliberate interference to other contestants;
(b) Only one false start is permitted per race;
(c) Caps and hi-vis are to be worn at all times.
