What is IRB Racing?
IRB Racing is a sport that involves Surf Life Savers operating an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in a course through surf. Each race consists of one driver, one crew and one patient in the water that requires rescuing in a simulated scenario.
Each year over 1000 competitors take part in IRB Racing all over Australia aging between 16 years to 60+ years of age in both male and female events.
One of the great strengths of the sport is that it allows the competitors to practice and refine the rescue skills that are so crucial throughout the summer season while patrolling our beaches in a fun and unique environment, while also utilising one of the more iconic pieces of lifesaving equipment - the IRB.
IRB Racing teaches the team about the upkeep of their equipment and are always working on trying to improve the performance which is extremely important when operating IRBs on Patrol or in an emergency.
Opportunities to Compete
- All NSW rounds are held at different beaches up and down the coast from Batemans Bay on the South Coast to South West Rocks on the Mid-North Coast of NSW.
- The Sea Wolves also compete at the Australian IRB Racing titles each year. This venue changes yearly but can be located anywhere along the coast of Australia.
- In 2024 The Sea Wolves will be competing at the Life Saving World Championships in Queensland and will be aiming high.
- Each of the four competition rounds and the State Championship attracts over 300 competitors and 50 officials. There is approximately 200 general public who watch the sport from the sand and surf clubs during the day. At the Australian Championships, there is over 1000 competitors and over 200 officials with approximately 1000 spectators.
