Evan joined Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC in 1951, gained his Bronze Medallion in 1952.
Evan coached the Seagulls Junior R&R teams for 24 years, coached Thirroul, Coalcliff and North Wollongong R&R teams, and coached the Illawarra Branch team for 20 years; competition official at Junior carnivals for over 30 years. Deputy NSW Carnival Referee for five years and NSW Carnival Referee for three years at State Junior Championships; Illawarra Branch delegate to the NSW Junior Activities body for 14 years, Deputy BJA Superintendent, Illawarra Branch for seven years from 1976, BJA Superintendent for eight years from 1983, NSW BJA Deputy Superintendent for five years from 1986, and NSW BJA Superintendent for three years from 1991.
Evan has also been a competition official at Branch and State Championship surf carnivals, and trained Club members for their Bronze Medallion, Surf Rescue Certificate and other awards.
Evan was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000, Order of Australia Medal in 2004, Life Membership of Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC in 1984, Life Membership of Surf Life Saving Illawarra 1998, and Life Membership of Surf Life Saving NSW 2001. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2004 for services to surf life saving, and to the community of Helensburgh.
Since 2002, Evan has been the Clubs historian.
In late-2006 Evan took on the role of Convenor of the History Book Committee and has overseen the work of a small team researching information, writing the text and editing "Vigilance and Service the history of Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club".
